Bloomington, IL – The Miller Park Zoo is excited to announce the brand new American Alligator exhibit starting Friday, May 3rd. The exhibit will house 2 alligators, a male, albino alligator, who is about 9 and half feet long, and a female alligator.
The American Alligator is the largest reptile in the United States. Their dark skin is armored with small, bony scales called scutes. American alligators can be found in the coastal wetlands of the U.S. Southeast, as far north as North Carolina and as far west as eastern Texas. Their range extends down to southern Florida and includes the Everglades. These reptiles are usually found in slow-moving freshwater rivers, but also inhabit swamps, marshes, and lakes.
The alligators will inhabit the former harbor seal exhibit. The Miller Park Zoological Society paid for $35,000 in renovations, which included a new wall, guardrails, and a new glass fence.
